Subsequent to acquiring Perot System at a cost of $3.9 billion in 2009, Dell is now planning to venture into information technology (IT) consultancy with a view to emerge as a provider of key outsourcing and administration services. In fact, senior Dell executives in Ireland have recently asserted that the company is intending to compete with major IT consultants like IBM, HP and five other consultancies.
Quoting Michael Dell, Dell founder and CEO, a website reports that the company considered Perot System a prized possession having great talents that would augment Dell’s prospects for both instant as well as continuing progress. Incidentally, the company, headquartered in Texas, had been manufacturing machines till some time back, is now seriously contemplating to provide IT services.
Both Dermot O’Connell, Dell country manager, and Liam O’Reilly, head of the Perot division in Ireland to be re-christened as Dell Services, appeared confident regarding the prospects of getting business as well as generating employment. Both have said that they were optimist of major prospects in providing infrastructure services. According to O’Connell, conventionally companies use up 95 per cent of their entire IT budget in order to keep things going and actually have very little money for novelty or modernization. In the case of Dell, they have kept the ratio at 50:50 and this enables them to propel new products and services into the market.
On the other hand, Liam O’Reilly pointed out that when Dell acquired Perot Systems, the firm had only 150 personnel on its rolls in Ireland, while the major workforce – 23,000 employees, were associated with different centers worldwide.
